Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
Works of the Flesh
Many of us struggle with our fleshly nature and if you are a little confused about what is fleshly, the Bible list just a few. To be clear the scripture says those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. It does not mean that if you sinned and messed up that you are disqualified from the kingdom. It is the intentional act to give into your own desires and follow after the flesh rather than God. If you follow your fleshly desire you are turning your back on God. Remember that this list is specific but it also says, “things like these.” Don’t think that because its not specifically listed that it is okay to do.
Many struggle with the flesh over and over because they have done nothing to defend or protect themselves. If you want to stop the struggle with flesh you must cut it off. I’m not talking about cutting your flesh off literally because obviously that would be gross and painful. Yet there is pain sometimes in our fight against the flesh. When you struggle with sexual immorality or impurity what are you doing to protect yourself against it? Do you struggle with pornography? Get rid of your internet and computer! Do you struggle with sexual immorality? Stop putting yourself in situations that allow it to happen! Do you struggle with drunkenness? Stop going to the bar and stop drinking! Do you understand? We have to rid ourselves of the things that are feeding our flesh. It might sound extreme but it could be the matter of eternity in heaven or hell.
I love to fish and catch fish! However sometimes it is not always easy to catch fish, that is why I have an arsenal of different types of baits and lures. Imagine that we are all a bunch of fish swimming around in a huge sea and imagine that Satan is the fisherman. He has every type of bait imaginable to lure each one of us. On one line he puts the bait of jealousy, on another he places the bait of sexual immorality. Underneath every piece of bait is a sharp hook. Every person is enticed by the bait and desires to have it, if only you could see the hook that is hidden by the bait. You see it is the hook that catches the fish, not the bait. Remember that every time your struggle or are tempted to follow your fleshly desires you have a choice. You have a choice to take the bait and bite down on that hook never to be released, or you can resist and run away (swim) as fast as you can.
