1 The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23 maybe one of the most beloved and most well known Psalms in the Bible. We often hear it read at funerals and various other places. There is great comfort knowing that the Lord is my shepherd. A shepherd is always there caring for his sheep making sure they are safe. He guides them to refreshing water and keeps them safe as they lie in green pastures. He goes after the one sheep who strays and brings them back to safety. Even as I read this passage and write I feel the power of my great Shepherd watching over me and guiding me. Many of us are walking through the valley of life and it can be scary not knowing what is ahead. We do not need to fear because our God is with us and He will protect us.
Have you ever been alone in the dark before? It can be scary. On one occasion I was hunting in the woods and it began to get dark and I realized I had forgotten my flashlight. Everything looks different at night and I soon got lost. After several hours of stumbling through the night I found my way back to a road. I can still remember the feeling of panic and fear that could have easily taken control. It is very different being alone in the dark than being with a friend or spouse. There is a sense of security when there is someone there with you. As you travel through the valley of life and darkness seems to close in around you. Remember that God our Shepherd is with you and he will guide you, protect you, and restore your soul.
