Pass the Salt

Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.”

I love salt!  It has many forms of use.  It is used for seasoning, preserving, medicine, cleaning etc…  Salt has literally thousands of different uses, however nothing is more familiar about salt then its taste.  It can bring the best flavor out of the foods we eat.  It takes something bland and brings life to it.  More than that.  Did you know that our bodies need salt to survive?  Salt contains a component of sodium ions that every living creature must have to sustain life.  The sodium ion maintains fluid balance, and helps perform a function that influences muscle contraction and relaxation.

Jesus, who created salt knew the importance of its functions.  He tells us that we are the “salt of the earth.”  One translations says “you are to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth.”  Then Jesus gives us the shot to the heart.  “If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness?”  If salt is necessary for us to maintain life, then God is needed to maintain a spiritual life.  Don’t lose your saltiness!  Every time you read your Bible, pray, or share Christ with others, you are sprinkling salt on your soul.  Don’t let your spiritual life be tasteless and good for nothing.  Let it be spread with the salt of Gods word for all the world to taste and see that God is good.
