Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him..
My story is not to different from many others out there. Years ago I went through a tragedy in my life that brought about much hurt, rejection, anger and ultimately left me depressed. Have you ever experienced rejection, anger and depression? Cain was angry and depressed because his offering was rejected. He was so angry that he killed his own brother. However even in Cain’s time of anger and depression, God came to him with a question. “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?” We all have a choice. It is what we choose to do with our circumstances that makes us who we are. Did you realize that there is a force working against you everyday? It is called sin and it “desires to have you.” We all have a choice to do what is right. Master sin but don’t let it be your master. Sadly even with a warning directly from God, Cain sinned and murdered his brother.
There is a story about St. Augustine, who was an early church father in Christian history. It is told that Augustine was captured and tortured for his faith in Christ. The guards tortured Augustine in hopes that he would renounce his faith in Christ. After going without sleep, food and beaten severely, St. Augustine would not renounce Christ. The guards began to talk about what to do next. They said, “we have beaten him, taken everything from him, and still he will not renounce Christ.” One guard said, “if we could just get Augustine to sin, he said ‘he would rather die than sin!’”
Wouldn’t it be great if all believers had the attitude that “they would rather die than sin!” Don’t give in to sin! Master sin and go to battle with the attitude that you would rather die than sin! Stop embarrassing the kingdom of God with your sin…
My precious Father. Forgive me of my sins I have committed in my heart. Help me to do what is write each day and honor you in all I do. May you give me strength to overcome temptation each day. Thank you for giving me strength and giving me forgiveness only possible though your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
