Matthew 5:43-44
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven;

Today is a day that many are celebrating their love for each other.  It is Valentines day and it is a day to show that special someone how much your love them.  Many of you will thinking about love today, some will loath this day while others have been looking forward to this day.  It is a day that most buy the one they love something special, or profess love for each other.  However, few people will be thinking about their enemies today.  Why?  An enemy is not someone your think of when you think of love.  In fact for most of us we find it very hard to have any love or feelings toward our enemies.  Do you have any enemies?  Perhaps it is a family member, an old friend, a boss or even a complete stranger.  Maybe someone said something about you or did something to hurt you.  I’m sure you know who your enemies are.  Have you ever thought about loving your enemy?  I have had enemies and I can assure you I did not love them.  That was until I read the words of Jesus.

Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you.  WHAT?  I’m supposed to love my enemies and pray for them?  Maybe that is not a shock to you, but it was something I really struggled with.  How can I love someone who hates me and wants to bring me harm?  I thought that God was asking a bit much here.  Then God spoke to me, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24)  There are millions of people who hate Jesus, and do not believe in Him as God.  Yet, Jesus died for every single person’s sins.  Regardless of how people felt or feel about Jesus, He died for every person on this earth.  Jesus was flogged, and a crown of thorns was pressed into his skull.  He was beaten beyond recognition and hung naked on a cross like a criminal.  What was His crime?  Love!  While Jesus hung on the cross grasping for air, with love in His heart He said, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24)  There was no cursing, there was no retaliation, there was only love.  Today is the perfect day to stop hating your enemies and start loving.  Today is the day to pray for your enemies and show your love toward them.  In doing so you will be sons of your Father in heaven.  How great is that?  Will you do what is easy or will you do what is right?
