“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” Psalm 43:5

1 in 10 people in the U.S. are affected by depression and over 120 million world wide live with some type of depression each day.  Depression can be brought on by many different factors or issues in our daily lives.  Sometimes it is temporary and sometimes it last for a long period of time.  It is different for each person but the symptoms are all the same.  There is a feeling of loneliness, sadness, exhaustion and even thoughts of suicide.  There is a feeling of giving up and losing all hope.  In the world today doctors and therapist want to treat it with medication and therapy.  While some of these maybe necessary there is nothing more powerful than the word of God to treat the darkness of depression.

Did you know that there were men and women who struggled with depression in the Bible?  The word depression is not found in the Bible but the symptoms are certainly described.  There are always two factors that cause depression.  It is either physical or spiritual.  Physical, being that you may have an illness or some type of medical issues going on in your body.  There are many different factors and you should consult a medical doctor to eliminate any possible biological issues.  The other cause of depression is always spiritual and we will look to scripture to treat this deep darkness in our souls.  At times the physical and spiritual are often intertwined that can leave a person miserable and hopeless.  Do you feel hopeless today?  Are you wore out and exhausted and lack the energy to even go through life each day?  Maybe you are just feeling all alone and sad and you don’t know why.  Don’t despair because there is hope!

Many of the Psalms were written by a King who’s name was David.  He composes a psalm and expresses a question, “why are you in despair, o my soul?  And why are you disturbed within me?”  Wow!  This took the words right out of my mouth a few years ago.  There was a time in my life where I went through some difficult things that left me feeling hopeless and in despair.  If you are in despair and have lost all hope, hold on because there is a good news.  Hope in God!  This maybe a little unspiritual but I’m a huge Star Wars fanatic.  I have posters, figurines, collectibles, movies, just about everything you can think of.  If you are familiar with Star Wars A New Hope, there is a scene where Princess Leia sends a secret message for help to Obi Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight and one of good guys.  In the message she says, “help me Obi Wan Kenobi your my only hope.”  You maybe asking what does this have to do with being depressed?  When you are in despair and all hope seems lost, ask God for help!  It goes like this, HELP ME GOD YOU ARE MY ONLY HOPE!  Why don’t you try saying this out loud to God right now.  HELP ME GOD YOU ARE MY ONLY HOPE!  King David is in despair an his response is the wisest of wise.  “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”  He recognized that in his depression that God was his only hope.  That he would praise God who would save him from his despair.  Have you tried to worship God and praise him when you are depressed?  You see, praising God takes the focus off ourselves and points it toward God.  It helps us recognize that God is in control and only HE can save us.

As we continue this journey and battle to overcome this hopeless state in our souls, take hope.  Take heart and recognize that even though you have lost all despair, hope in God because he is your only hope.  Until you realize that God is your only hope despair and hopelessness will continue to take hold of  your life.

Prayer: God my father I praise you and put my hope in you!  You are my only hope God and without you I am lost.  Give me strength to overcome this emptiness inside me.  You are my only light in this darkness, shine out bright inside me and crush this hopelessness.  Amen
